Jane Grey was sixteen when she was proclaimed Queen of England.
Her reign lasted just thirteen days.
Seven months later, at seventeen, she was executed within the walls of the Tower of London.
History remembers her as the Nine Days’ Queen, a name that has come to define a life that was far richer,
more complex and more remarkable than the few days for which she is remembered,
Scholar, daughter, protestant, prisoner and queen.
Yet, more than four centuries after her death, we cannot say with certainty that we know what she looked like.
HISTORY PRESERVED HER NAME.
IT NEVER PRESERVED HER FACE.
